In general, they’re delighted to receive any franchise with all of their hearts. The only team for which there’s a little reluctance has to be Oakland Raiders. Why? The week 16 game was not an outstanding weekend for Madden NFL 24 of the officiating. There was one unforgivable call that was so shocking that I would like to see the official who made it cannot be permitted to be in the vicinity of any playoff games. The offending call is the bizarre taunting penalty on Steelers cornerback William Gay after a particularly stunning, unspectacular, play by Steelers middle linebacker Lawrence Timmons on third down.
Imagine this: the Steelers were leading 17-6 in a need to win game with 12:39 remaining during the 4th quarter. The opponent they were playing, the Chiefs were facing the third-and-17 option from their own 23-yard line. The Steelers clearly took advantage of the receivers by defending the entire field and forced Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith to dump the ball off short towards tight-end Travis Kelce. Timmons was in the opposite direction of the formation in coverage, but he was hauled in and made one-on-one tackle on the field in the open for an average of two yards. It may have looked like an ordinary play, but there was no way Kelce would gain enough yards to earn the first down anyway. If you really look at the play, it’s important to see how fast Timmons was running and how quickly he seemed to be able to collect himself and create a secure tackle. This is the exact opposite of routine or easy.
As I can discern, one of these naivete was the one who threw the flag as he thought Gay was teasing the Chiefs player, when there wasn’t one in the area. The reason Gay was standing in the middle of the field with his arms crossed. Dassit. They were all unwilling to look up at the Jumbotron to discover just how ridiculous of a decision they were going to make.
The Steelers had battled their bodies off to take the Chiefs to punt, however, because of an random and inconsistant rule that allows referees claim things they didn’t have a clue about, and a rule that does not allow for reviewing to keep refs up to date and fair, the Steelers defense was forced back to the field while the Chiefs continued the drive.
